Hockessin Public Library
Wayfinding & Signage Program :: New Castle, DE

As part of an expansion program, the Hockessin Public Library engaged Ikon.5 Architects to design two additions that appear as pavilions in the landscape. While one of the pavilions is set on the ground, the wing housing the children’s collection cantilevers above a flood plain and into adjacent woodlands. Patterned glass walls lend visual texture to the facades.

Jack Hulme Design created a wayfinding program including exterior and interior signage utilizing materials and textures complementary to the new architecture. Sign panels are made of layers of acrylic, with text and colored graphics presenting a dimensional quality. The sign package included wall-mounted identification signs, suspended directional signs, as well as code and stack area signage. In addition to the signage, an abstract illustrated vine-and-leaf pattern was designed for the walls and ceilings leading to the new children’s wing; this element was not incorporated into the finished project due to budget limitations.

The expanded library was complete in fall 2007.
